Case Study – Scots Law Talks

Scots Law Talks was set up by Lindsay Conchar with the goal of making knowledge of Scots Law accessible to anyone, not just those working in the legal the legal profession. The organisation runs interactive talks, hands on workshops and study camps, as well as being available for hire at private events. Scots Law Talks uses venues around Scotland with The Circle’s Dudhope Castle hub as one of its regular venues.

We asked Lindsay from Scots Law Talks about her experience with The Circle:
Why did you set up your organisation? What goal(s) did you have in mind?

Scots Law Talks was set up with a simple but powerful belief — that knowledge of Scots law should be available to everyone, not just those already working in the legal profession. The law touches every part of our lives, yet it can often feel like a closed world, full of complex language and systems that seem out of reach to most people. We wanted to change that.

Our main goal was (and continues to be) to make learning about law engaging, accessible, and relevant — whether you’re thinking of studying law yourself, working in a related field, or simply curious about how justice works in Scotland. Through our interactive talks and workshops, we aim to demystify legal concepts, explore real cases, and encourage discussion about the issues that affect our communities.

Why did you choose to work with The Circle? What makes you choose to continue working with us?

We also believe in the power of place. That’s why we partner with venues like The Circle in Dundee — spaces that are rooted in their communities and that share our vision for social impact. Working with venues that promote inclusion and social change allows us to reach new audiences and create learning experiences that go beyond the traditional classroom or lecture hall.

We chose to work with The Circle because it’s more than just a venue — it’s a vibrant social enterprise that shares our commitment to making a real difference in people’s lives.
The Circle is a place that welcomes people from all walks of life, and that aligns perfectly with what Scots Law Talks is all about: breaking down barriers to legal knowledge and making law something that feels relevant, understandable, and empowering. The venue’s strong focus on inclusion, learning, support and social impact creates the ideal environment for our events.

How would you describe your experience of working with The Circle?

Our experience of working with The Circle has been fantastic. From the very beginning, the team has been supportive, flexible, and enthusiastic about what we do. There’s a real sense that they care not just about the logistics of hosting an event, but about the purpose behind it too.

What did you gain from working with The Circle?

The venue itself is welcoming and accessible. Whether it’s helping with promotion, making sure everything runs smoothly on the day, or simply offering encouragement, The Circle team consistently go above and beyond. It’s a pleasure to work with an organisation that shares our values and genuinely wants to see our work succeed.

Has The Circle helped you in achieving any of your goals?

The support from The Circle in promoting our events, welcoming attendees, and creating a friendly environment has contributed greatly to the success of our talks in Dundee.

Have you had a particular ‘stand out’ moment in your time of working with The Circle?

Our most recent talk at The Circle was a particularly special moment for us. We had the pleasure of welcoming Paul Hastie, Co-Chief Executive Officer, to our sold-out event The Guilty Mind. The atmosphere was electric, and it was genuinely one of those nights where everything just came together — our attendees always speak so highly of The Circle, and it’s easy to see why.

Another stand-out moment, on a more personal note, was the kindness and support shown by Martin during the event set-up. As I was arranging the space — with my very energetic two-year-old “helping” by running around — Martin didn’t miss a beat. He assisted with setting out chairs, testing equipment, and ensuring everything was ready, all while being incredibly understanding and supportive. His help, along with Charli’s, made a huge difference, and I truly can’t thank them both enough. It’s moments like these that make working with The Circle such a pleasure.

Would you recommend The Circle to other individuals or organisations?

Without hesitation — yes, absolutely.

The Circle is so much more than a venue. It’s a community-driven space that genuinely supports the people and organisations it works with. We’ve had consistently great experiences, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for an inclusive and welcoming space to bring their ideas to life.
